Rahym’s Journey to a new career with Dowhigh Ltd
Rahym registered with Sefton@Work seeking support to find full-time, sustainable employment. Having only briefly worked in retail and with no clear idea of his career direction, Rahym was unsure of his next steps. His employment adviser recognised his willingness to learn and suggested exploring training opportunities in alternative sectors.
Encouraged by his adviser, Rahym was enrolled in a Rail Engineering and Track Maintenance NVQ course. He successfully completed the training, gaining valuable technical skills in a growth sector. However, despite being qualified, Rahym struggled to find consistent and regular employment in the sector due to a shortage of available shifts with employers.
Undeterred, and with ongoing guidance from his adviser, Rahym completed a Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) course through an external training provider. He gained his CSCS card, broadening his opportunities in the construction sector.
Rahym did secure several temporary roles with Sefton Work's help to gain experience but, the lack of permanent positions or regular hours meant that he was frequently out of work. This cycle of short-term employment became a major source of frustration for Rahym, who was keen to find stability and build a future—especially with a baby on the way.
Recognising his determination and reliability, Sefton@Work referred Rahym to one of our new employers offering a six-week work placement. Rahym made the most of the opportunity, demonstrating his strong work ethic, reliability, and eagerness to learn. His performance during the placement impressed the employer—Dowhigh Ltd, a leading civil engineering and highways maintenance company. At the end of the placement, Dowhigh offered Rahym a full-time, contracted position with the company.
Rahym is now in secure, full-time employment with Dowhigh Ltd.
Rahym’s journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of tailored support. His story highlights how targeted advice, training, and the right employer connections can transform lives.
