Description:
Support
worker required for a 14-year-old boy with a diagnosis of autism spectrum
disorder (ASD) and ADHD. He is a bright and energetic young person with a
fun-loving personality and a great sense of humour.
He
can sometimes struggle to engage with people and may take time to build
relationships. He would benefit from support from someone who is patient,
understanding, and able to match his individual needs and pace. He has
additional support needs relating to communication, emotional regulation, and
maintaining focus, and benefits from clear structure, consistency, and gentle
guidance.
He
has several interests that bring him real joy. He loves trains and enjoys
watching them or learning about them. He is a big fan of McDonald’s as a
treat, enjoys playing Mario Kart, and loves being active—especially trips to
Flip Out, where he can burn off energy and have fun.
He
can sometimes find changes to routine or overwhelming environments
challenging, and he may need reassurance and support during these times. He
thrives with someone who is calm, flexible, and able to build a trusting,
supportive relationship with him.
This
role would suit someone who is kind, reliable, and enjoys working with young
people, and who can support him to access activities he enjoys while helping
him develop independence and confidence.
Duties (day
to day):
* Provide 1:1 support to always ensure safety and wellbeing.
* Support to access activities he enjoys, such as trips out (e.g.
Flip Out), train-related activities, and community outings.
* Encourage and facilitate engagement in preferred activities (e.g.
playing Mario Kart) while promoting positive interaction.
* Transport to and from activities; having access to your own car is
desirable
* Use a patient, understanding approach to help him engage at his
own pace and build a trusting relationship.
* Support communication by using clear, simple language and giving
processing time where needed.
* Provide structure and routine during sessions to help him feel
secure.
* Support emotional regulation by recognising triggers, offering
reassurance, and using calming strategies when needed.
* Help him manage transitions between activities and cope with
changes to plans.
* Encourage independence in a safe and supported way (e.g. making
choices, simple decision-making).
* Support appropriate behaviour in the community and model social
interactions where needed.
* Accompany to places like McDonald’s and support him with ordering
and social expectations.
* Ensure a calm and positive environment, adapting support to meet
his sensory and emotional needs.
* Communicate regularly with parents/carers regarding activities,
progress, and any concerns.
Essential skills:
* Patience and understanding when supporting a young person with ASD
and ADHD
* Ability to build trust and engage at clients pace
* Good communication skills, including using clear and simple
language
* Awareness of autism and ADHD, and how these can impact behaviour
and communication
* Ability to remain calm and respond positively in challenging
situations
* Flexibility and adaptability to meet changing needs and situations
* Skills in supporting emotional regulation and recognising triggers
* Ability to provide structure and maintain consistent routines
* Encouraging independence while ensuring safety and appropriate
boundaries
* Confidence in supporting a young person in the community
* Good observation skills to recognise changes in mood or behaviour
* Reliability, punctuality, and a strong sense of responsibility
* Ability to follow guidance from parents/carers and work as part of
a team
* Full driving licence and access to a car for transporting Client
is desirable
DBS (always)
